Outside Plant Technologies for Public Networks

This Handbook gives an insight into the construction and usage of telecommunication cables. Telecommunication cables represent a large investment and provide a vital link in transmitting information. Accordingly, they must be designed to provide a consistent, reliable electrical path while resisting mechanical and environmental conditions imposed during their installation and service life. Good quality materials need to be selected and arranged to meet local conditions and cost objectives.

Gas supply equipment
The gases commonly used for pressurization are air or nitrogen. While both gases are equally effective and either may be used for aerial cables, it is undesirable to use nitrogen in underground cables in ducts because if it escapes and accumulates in manholes it may result in a danger of suffocation to staff. However, this danger may be reduced it normal precautions are taken before entering a manhole.
