World Information Society Report 2006

The second edition of the World Information Society Report: Beyond WSIS, published by ITU and UNCTAD, looks beyond the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS, Geneva 2003 - Tunis 2005) to the creation of an inclusive, people-centred and development-oriented Information Society, open to all. The report tracks progress in digital opportunity for 181 economies over the past few years since the start of the WSIS process and is accompanied by a series of tables providing the latest statistics on the development of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) worldwide. The report has been created by the "Digital Opportunity Platform", an open multi-stakeholder platform with contributions from governments, private sector, academics and civil society, as well as inter-governmental organisations.

Foreword and Acknowledgements
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was held in two phases: in Geneva, from 10-12 December 2003 and in Tunis, from 16-18 November 2005. The Summit set out a vision of a future Information Society in which Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are available anywhere, anytime and to anyone. The Tunis phase focused on the challenge of realising this vision, by turning principles into actions. It is in accepting this challenge, and in implementing the WSIS outcomes, that our work continues today.
